Minnesota strategy for public tantrum management
April 26, 2008
Because I lived most of my life in Minnesota, I still read the Minneapolis Star Tribune on-line, and this morning’s edition had a story that should inspire anyone who has ever had a child melt down in public.
The Wakanheza Project has been implemented by a variety of institutions, including the Children’s Museum, which is offering training to similar facilities around the country. The idea is to diffuse a tense situation between parents and kids by distracting and reassuring the child, while calming and showing empathy to the parent. Anyone who has ever stood helplessly by while a painful scene plays out in a grocery store or other public place - and isn’t that most of us? - should read this story.
